A little bit of a change to the previous notice for this months meeting - Ray Camden has made himself available, and will be presenting on all of the new AJAX features in ColdFusion 8.

Ray needs no introduction to the community at large. He has truly earned his "Jedi" status in the ColdFusion world, and has created many open source ColdFusion based projects.

It's amazing we've gone 2 1/2 years without a presentation from Ray, but better late than never! Please come armed with your AJAX questions and we'll see if we can stump him.

There will be lots of goodies, etc, to give away, and dinner will be served, as usual, so please RSVP.
Cheers,

It was suggested early in the year that we dedicate some time to the members to discuss and/or present the issues and/or situations they are facing with technology in their businesses. With no external speakers available, we're going to try this suggestion this month.

This is a call to all members to bring a topic to talk about, and there will be an incentive to give a short presentation to the group. Give a 10-15 minute presentation on something ColdFusion/Flex/AIR related and you'll get 5 extra tickets to the software raffle.

"The Software raffle?" I hear you say? Yes, in case you've lost track, amidst all the giveaways we've had this year, the big Adobe software raffle has to take place either this month or next. So, on Tuesday, we'll flip a coin and decide which meeting it will be. The more tickets you have in the box, the better your chances of winning*

I'll update this post with suggestions from the group - so please get back to me with your suggestions. As usual, dinner will be served, please RSVP.

Topic Suggestions so far:

ColdFusion 8 upgrade - recently performed by the MediFit team.

First CF supported iPhone web application

Cheers,

        David

* NOTE: Eligibility to win the big Adobe prize has been explained at previous meetings - please email me with your questions. Howls of protest will be duly ignored.

According to the recent user group survey (the results of which I'll share at the meeting), one of the biggest gaps in our Adobe product knowledge is that of LiveCycle Data Services.

NOTE: The URL for this meeting is http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/r55524223/

Recently Adobe announced the release of BlazeDS which will make open source some key server technologies that are critical to building great applications with Flex and ColdFusion. This presentation will detail exactly what you get in BlazeDS and how it relates to LiveCycle Data Services and details some of the reasons why you might want to use these server technologies with Flex. Tom Jordahl of Adobe has offered to give a presentation on Blaze, what it is and how we can use it.

Will we have software to raffle? Heck Yeah! Ed Sullivan has graciously allowed us to raffle off a copy of either Flex 3 (professional) or ColdFusion 8 (standard) - you must be present to win.

We will be conducting this meeting over Connect, so if you cannot attend, please email me for the URL (domalley at this domain). We will, as ever, be providing pizza, so please RSVP, as I'll need a head count.

David

About the Presenter:
Tom Jordahl is a Senior Computer Scientist at Adobe and is currently working on the LiveCycle Data Services and BlazeDS team. Before making the jump to Flex land, Tom was the architect for ColdFusion 8 and over the past 11 years at Allaire/Macromedia/Adobe has designed and/or implemented a wide variety of features in both the original C++ and Java versions of ColdFusion. He was also a core team member on the JRun 4.0 and Apache Axis 1.x development teams and was the Adobe representative on the W3C WSDL 2.0 working group. Tom is busy working on making Flex and LiveCycle Data Services the best they can be.
Happy New Year to everyone. Before I forget, please click here to take the 2008 CFUGitives Survey. Your opinion will help us get the topics you're interested in.

2007 was a pivotal year in the technology world. Adobe, Google, Microsoft - all released new tools to increase productivity, and add new feature sets. One of the biggest news items in 2007 was the push to the desktop, with new, richer, and still connected applications.

All signs point to more momentum in this area, so we're delighted to be able to start the new year with a presentation on a hot new technology, Adobe AIR. A lot of people, and I'm one of them, don't "get" the desktop paradigm, so it's something we're going to spend some time tackling this year.

In this topic, Jeff will talk about ways to set up your project in order to maximize reuse of your Flex code when you want to deploy both as a web applications and as an AIR application.

Jeff needs no introduction to our group, but we'll do it anyway: He is the owner of Dot-Com-It, and hosts "The Flex Show" podcast. He is the author of many ColdFusion books, and has been a regular presenter at the group.

We'll be serving dinner, as usual, so please RSVP.

First of all, thank you, all, for making this a very successful year for the group. We’ve increased membership, attracted some great speakers, and had a great turnout at the Scorpio event. Our November meeting was the last for 2007, so what lies ahead?

2008 is going to be a big year in our technology space.
How do we top 2008? Topic: HostMySite - The ColdFusion 8 Upgrade

How did they do it? From the time that Adobe announced ColdFusion was in Alpha, to final release, HostMySite seemed to be in lock step with Adobe. They were the first to offer free beta accounts on CF8, and the first to offer CF 8 hosting services.

So, what were the technical challenges? How difficult was the transition? Have there been any unexpected road bumps? What about server performance gains - has ColdFusion lived up to the hype? More importantly, what can we learn from their experience?

Matthew Ferrari is the Infrastructure Manager for HostMySite.com and he will be here to answer all our questions.

If you have any specific questions, or a particular area of interest, please forward them ahead of time, so that Matthew can prepare his presentation accordingly.

This is our last meeting of the year, so I hope you can make it. Pizza will be served - please RSVP.
MAX is the premier Adobe event, held annually. This year it was held in Chicago, which Ron Hiner and I attended.

Previously, Ron and I have both attended MacroMedia events, but this is the first Adobe event we attended. We posted some notes on the site about sessions we attended, but we'd like to give a higher level view of what's going on, and update on some new announcements made by Adobe at the conference.

Without a doubt, the landscape is changing - the line between "developers" and "designers" is blurring. How badly would a designer like to take a photoshop comp and create a fully functional Flex app? Now, the pendulum is swinging the other way.

We have some goodies to give away, so don't miss the raffle. Please RSVP so I know how much food to offer.
Hey everyone, Day 2 summary as follows:

OK, remember when I said yesterday that this is still a "developers" conference? Well, the lines between design and development got seriously blurred today!

The day 2 keynote dragged a little, I have to be honest. What they did is concentrate on some specific products and services - most you've probably never heard of. There were, however, a few stand out's:

1) Adobe Share - share your documents anywhere, with anyone. 1GB free, a slick interface, and security permissions on your documents. https://share.adobe.com/adc/login.do is the URL, and you should sign up for the Beta. This one has legs....methinks!

2) Thermo. OK, I'm not a designer, but even *I* was floored by this. Essentially, take a photoshop comp, with all its layers, images, etc, and turn it into a Flex app, without writing a line of code. It truly has to be seen to be believed.

3) COCOMO: Adobe Connect (formerly breeze) in your flex apps, using (of course) simple one-line tags. This one will be worth a look, as time progresses.

Nothing like a little (advanced) hands-on ColdFusion reporting to get your day started! Personally, I think outcomes reporting is such a massive need at the corporate level, that I'd like to see big improvements in this area for CF 9.

Speaking of which, the codename for the next version of CF will be "Centaur".

I went to a hands-on Fireworks/CSS class, and totally got my ass kicked! I blame it on the whole left side/right side of the brain thing. Still, I got some great resources from the Fireworks evangelist for prototyping in a design tool and moving to production environment, which I'll share with you when I have more information.

Like I said, the line between design and development is blurring.

Some Adobe AIR and Flex accessibility rounded out a long day.
First order of the day, for all attendees, was the Keynote (well, after breakfast, of course). You know, there are a few things I noticed about MAX pre and post Adobe:

1) It's bigger, better. It's obvious that Adobe has more money to spend, and isn't afraid to spend it.
2) MacroMedia is still very much alive - personnel wise, anyway. All of the brains from MacroMedia were promoted, not jettisoned, which means Adobe made some very smart decisions that will stand to them in years to come.
3) This is still a developers conference.

the last point may get me into a little bit of trouble. Sure, this is an Adobe conference, and yes, developer tools pale in comparison to design, when it comes to revenue. Still, the development tools, such as ColdFusion, Flex, AIR and to a major degree Flash, were front and center.

The keynote would have bombed if it was just a catalog of adobe products, and what's new about each one - but it wasn't that. It was focused on providing solutions - the ones that engage the user and want them to come back for more.

I know it's hard to see where AIR fits in - but after you see what some people are doing, it makes total sense. I'll see if I can drum up some more speakers for the group while I'm here.

Ron and my schedules conflicted a little, but I took in two sessions he didn't mention:

1) Flash Accessibility: This is more work than you think it is! Imagine someone who can't use a keyboard, or can't see a screen, and you'll see what 508 is all about.
2) ColdFusion and LiveCycle Data Services (LCDS). This was quite interesting. LCDS is like a live update of information on your page - using CF as the back end to monitor that data. With ColdFusion 8, LCDS was made more integrated out of the box. NOTE: Install LCDS when you install CF8, or it's going to be a headache to go back and fix it later!

The communities are well represented this year - with our own lounge area. Adobe really wants to push the community efforts, which is great news for us.

I'll have some photos to post soon.
David and I are here with about 3998 perspective CFugitives members. If David is successful and getting a fraction of them to come to our meetings, the local pizza guy is going to be able to retire early!

Kevin Lynch hosted the keynote... and you are right if you guessed that he had a highly produced presentation where he talked about AIR and all the wonderful things Adobe is doing for the world of Flash, Flex, Air, and ColdFusion. However, there was virtually no mention of Photoshop, only passing reference to InDesign, and no mention of Lighroom at all. That's ok... we are there to learn about web development technologies. (Lightroom is cool -- one day I'd like to explore whether it would be useful to catalog all the images -- gifs, jpgs, and source tiffs and PSDs -- that I need to keep track of.)

I attended a session on CF Server Monitoring and Management. it turned out to be CF8 specific. There are great tools in there to keep track of what database queryies are being using -- and how many times the queries are run, and how much memory they take to cache. It's long been possible to figure this out, but this makes it easy. One note -- the server monitors and profilers add very little overhead to the server... but the memory profiler is so resource intensive that we were strongly cautioned never to even turn it on on a production server.

Next up was a hands-on session on building Flex apps with a CF backend. It was basically a demo of the CF wizards in Flex 3. And, while it generated a bunch of code, the app didn't work in the end. That, by the way, pretty much sums up my experience with Flex 2.

Then, I attended Ben Forta's session on Building CF powered Ajax apps. Unlike Flex counterpart presentation (not hosted by Ben), this worked really well. He demoed the ajax app wizard -- which is pretty much identical to the flex cold fusion application wizard. Then we went on to coding by hand cfform tags with data binding to CFCs. yes, this was hands on session. We were given no code to start with. The resulting apps required no JS skills -- and worked perfectly the very first time.. Schweet! This session was clearly the most useful session for me today.

Tomorrow's another day... looking forward to more successful sessions.

Oh... one more thing. You know that Adobe swag that David always seems to come up with for our meeting? Well, that stuff is here, as you might imagine. But you get to pay for it. Mouse pads $5.95. (Does anybody still use mouse pads?) T-shirts $25. Adobe hats galore -- all for a price. So come to CFugitives meetings for a chance to get it all for free! (I must confess I bought a pair of USB-powered Lava Lamps. My daughters will love them, and will finally have a use for the USB ports on their laptops.
Hello everyone - Ron Hiner and I are at MAX in Chicago, and we'll do out best to post some highlights from each day. There's really too much to post everything, so we'll leave the details for the October meeting.

Some details in short:

MAX 2007 is being held in Chicago and McCormick West convention center. The place is Massive! I gave myself 10 minutes to get from the Community lounge to a session and I was late - I walk quick, too.

There are a lot of events happening, starting at 8:30, and going until midnight.

U2's Bono is here (more on that later).

Enjoy the posts.
Topic: ColdFusion all AIR-ed out.

The newest buzz in the technology world is Adobe's Apollo, now named AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime), which allows you to take web based applications and deploy them on the Desktop.

Adobe will tell you it's as easy as a push of the button, that web based HTML, AJAX and Flex apps can be deployed to the desktop, and enhanced to access the computers I/O and hardware devices. But how true is that, and what about application languages like ColdFusion?

Boston based Pier, inc. is at the forefront of of this new cutting edge technology, and will be presenting, in-person, their work with AIR.

Also, Eugene Abitang was just at CFUnited, and returns with a bag full of goodies - we'll raffle everything off. Also, considering the high profile of our guests, we'll also be raffling off some very special Adobe swag. "Will there be Adobe Software for raffle David?" Hmmmm, that sounds like a good idea - we'll just have to see!

Please RSVP, as ever we'll need a head count for Pizza.

In this presentation we’ll dirty the marketing patina on Flex RIA development with real stories from the trenches. We’ll take a look at the true cost of UX and the many lessons learned in the process of designing, developing, and deploying applications with ColdFusion, Flex, and Adobe AIR.

We’ll take a brisk walk through the process of converting a traditional HTML application built with ColdFusion into a Flex application that runs in AIR using the same CF backend. In this demonstration, we will discuss CF’s evolving role from that of generating the presentation layer of HTML applications to one more involved in providing data for rich front-ends. Topic: Creating Flex Components

There's not doubt about it - there's a renaissance in Web Development these days, and much of the buzz owes to the advances in technology. Leading the charge in this department are AJAX and Adobe Flex.

At this meeting, our very own Jeff Houser will introduce Components in Flex, what they are, how and when to use them. This presentation will show you how to take a simple Flex application and modify it to make use of Flex's component creating features. It starts simple and builds up from there.

As ever, we'll need a head count, so please RSVP.

Thanks, David.
